Backing Welsh food innovation

Afallen has played a pivotal role with helping bring a new food to Welsh markets.

The Lion’s Mane mushroom burger has proved to be a popular addition at the popular Swansea eatery and coffee shop ‘Ground‘. The mushrooms are harvested in Trimsaram, Carmarthenshire, and combined with other ingredients to produce a healthy alternative to the traditional meat burger.

Afallen is linked to this innovation in two ways. Firstly, Tetrim Tea is one of the partners in the mushroom supply company. Tetrim Tea was founded by Mari Arthur, a Partner in Afallen.

Afallen has also provided practical support to the development of the new product through our involvement in an InnovateUK project, run through Abersytwyth University.

The project is focussed on developing functional food products that incorporate ingredients such as Lion’s Mane that can provide additional health benefits.

Joseph Kidd, from Afallen, said: “Whilst Lions Mane has been creating a buzz for a while now, incorporating it into foods so that it is more widely accessible is the next big step. Establishments like Ground are at the forefront of this with the development of their burger – combining great taste with valuable health benefits.”
